Homeowners give high marks to their first experience of building.

“I had always wanted to build a home, and we finally took the plunge,” says Joni Williams. She and her husband, Jeff, are enjoying their new digs in a new development in West Des Moines.

They had lived in a traditional home with traditional furnishings and accessories. No more. They got rid of everything and took a turn to contemporary.

In 2013 they visited a home show and liked what they saw in homes by K&V Homes. They ruminated on the possibility of building for a time while looking for a lot and finally called Colin King. “We didn’t meet with anyone else,” Joni says. “We felt completely comfortable with him. He was always willing to answer our questions and work with our ideas.”

Showy wildflowers

The couple settled on a lot in a new development that didn’t even have streets yet and bought a 2.7-acre property on a hill. They can’t wait until later in the spring; they have planted thousands of wildflowers backing up to woods on two long sides of their property.

They opted for an open-plan walkout ranch with 5,100 square feet.

The wow factor throughout the home includes huge windows, which, of course, bring the outdoors in wherever possible. The windows magnify the best of all four seasons.

The great-room offers three distinct areas—seating area/living room, kitchen, and dining area. The spaces have a relaxing and welcoming gray-beige-white neutral palette. Contrast comes in shiny/smooth and textural accessories and finishes.

In the living area two sofas face each other. Two white leather side chairs form an inviting conversational area in front of a floor-to-ceiling stacked-stone fireplace with a concrete hearth and bench. Two adjoining extra-large wooden coffee tables stand between the couches. An area rug adds more texture. A metal chandelier gives an artful touch over the area.

White kitchen

The kitchen, sleek and all white, contains a huge island with a sink and quartz countertops that are white with a subtle gray swirl for a marbled effect. Three industrial-style pendants light the area. Features include white subway tiles for backsplash, a walk-in pantry for staples and small appliances, plus a butler’s pantry for extra dishes, glassware, and serving pieces. Six stools at the island provide extra seating.

The dining area is highlighted by a contemporary trestle table with chairs upholstered in a subtle herringbone pattern.

Huge windows bring the outside in. And for natural light on the other side of the great-room, four clerestory windows bathe the entryway in light.

Also on the main floor are a powder room off a hallway by the great-room, a guest bedroom with its own bath, and Jeff’s office, where a sleek sawhorse-style desk with a black leather chair gives him a spot to enjoy the natural view out oversize windows. Jeff is a sales manager for Fiserv, an information technology solutions company.

The laundry room opens onto the master closet and bath. The bath features a sculptural soaking tub, a walk-in shower with a half wall, and two separate vanities. The bedroom, which also has huge windows with a fabulous view, showcases a tufted headboard, white textured duvet, and large teardrop bedside lighting.

Jeff and Joni particularly enjoy the wrap-around deck, which works well for entertaining. In the comfortable seating area are another fireplace and a television for outdoor game watching. With easy access to the great-room, there’s plenty of room for large gatherings.

Lower level

The couple enjoys gathering their family and relaxing on the home’s lower level. The sleek look continues with heated concrete flooring. The lower level has a family room complete with bar/kitchenette and two guest rooms. The gray-and-white design from upstairs continues below. Texture comes in details; family photos, books, and memorabilia from travels give a personal touch.

“We honestly didn’t know if we would use the downstairs very much, but it turns out that we do,” Joni says. “When the grandkids come, it’s a great place to play and spread out. And for relaxing or watching television, we find that we do go there a lot.” A path leads out to a fire pit from the lower level.

“My wife did so much of the detail design on the building process, and it turned out beautifully,” Jeff says. “We also are grateful to Kathy Sorbe and Tom Rosenfeldt of The Elements in Prairie Trail, who helped so much.” Joni knew Kathy from northwest Iowa long before Kathy started the Prairie Trail store.

From the builder’s standpoint, Colin King says, “Joni and Jeff were so great to work with. The plan was a collaborative effort. Communication is the key, and we all made that work beautifully.” The lot is unique, he says, and everyone worked together to customize the property.

“It all was a terrific experience,” Jeff explains. “The process and our new home far exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend K&V Homes to anyone wanting to build their own custom home.”
