A Pleasant Hill cook with a big heart spreads joy by sharing goodies.

If you are lucky enough to know Betty Warrick of Pleasant Hill, then you know that every Monday is a holiday. That’s her day to volunteer at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Those who work with her and those in the office know that she spends part of her weekend making delicious treats to take with her on Monday.

“When my husband, Marvin, passed away seven years ago, it was good therapy for me to keep busy and help others,” she explains. “I brought in treats one day and saw how it just made everyone happy.” At Iowa Lutheran, Betty is also a member of the auxiliary and a past president.

“She walks in every Monday morning with a warm coffeecake, bread, or other delicious treats for the Monday morning volunteers, staff, and physicians,” says Susan Evans, the hospital’s director of development.

In addition, for the past four years, Betty has generously donated to an annual fund-raiser, the Westerberg Celebration, named for the founder of Iowa Lutheran. “There’s a silent auction, with Betty’s ‘Dessert for a Year’ contribution. She brings a tray filled with treats and agrees to make a different dessert each month for the coming year,” Evans says. To date, Betty’s treats have raised more than $1,200 for the hospital.

For the auction, two physicians, Dr. John Heffernan and Dr. Ian Lin, are each two-time winners of Betty’s yearlong baking bonanza. “One of them has been known to share his monthly dessert at the hospital; the other, not so much,” Evans says with a laugh.

At the holidays, Betty goes all out, with traditional classics: sugar cookies, peanut clusters, haystacks, spritz cookies, pumpkin cookies, various candies, and Dutch letters, for which she is known.

“My mother was a baker, so I came by it naturally,” Betty says. Her family—two children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, with a new one expected in January—is glad she carries on the tradition.

Betty loves to keep old recipes alive, but she is always on the lookout for new ones, too. She enjoys sharing holiday plates of goodies with friends, neighbors, and relatives. In her work life, she was an administrative assistant at Anderson Erickson Dairy.
