Soups are satisfying all year long, especially for us at the Iowa State Fair.

On the grounds at the Iowa State Fair, visitors could find tried-and-true must-have foods to enjoy. There were new ones, too, such as Pork Belly on a Stick, Apple Eggrolls, Deep-Fried Pecan Pie on a Stick, Honey Sriracha Cheese Stix, and Cookie Dough Spaghetti.

But inside the Elwell Family Food Center, your intrepid Welcome Home staffers were seeking yummy soups to share with you. For at least a decade, this magazine has sponsored a Souper Soups contest. Each year we are blown away by the creativity of Iowa cooks.

It’s a small contest, so all manner of soups compete. A hot beef stew might be up against a cold strawberry soup. It’s “apples and oranges” at its finest, but we do our best to be discerning. After all, the serious soup season is coming up.

Sometimes trends just seem to happen, even from cooks who don’t know each other. This year took a nod to seafood, with recipes that included shrimp, crabmeat, scallops, and tilapia. Two of the winners feature shellfish.

Another side benefit for us at the magazine is that we love seeing repeat winners from year's past. But, of course, we also love it when first-time entrants in our contest walk away with one of the top prizes, too. It's all good and yummy.

This Year’s Winner:

  • First Place: Roasted Corn and Crab Soup
Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines
  • Second Place: Tuscan Bean Soup
    Pamela Lang of Johnston
  • Third Place: Peach Buttermilk Soup
Rebecca Howe of West Des Moines
  • Honorable Mention: Seafood Soup Fra Diavolo
Kyle Barton of West Des Moines
