For the last decade, the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Des Moines has been offering Iowa residents a rare opportunity—for free. March 9 – 11 it happens again.
The Home & Remodeling Show, sponsored by the HBA of Greater Des Moines, presents home buyers and homeowners with a wealth of information on home-related topics. And though there are other home-related shows throughout the year, the Home & Remodeling Show is the only one with a local focus.
“Everyone who exhibits at the show is local,” says this year’s chairman, Brandon Patterson of Peoples Company in Des Moines. “And this year we’re helping build locally by partnering with Habitat for Humanity.” Attendees can donate at the door, and all proceeds will go to the Des Moines Area Habitat for Humanity construction projects.
“We plan to build or renovate 26 homes this year,” says Habitat’s Outreach Manager, Jenna Nathan. “That’s the most we’ve ever done, and it’s a perfect number because we’ve been working in the Des Moines area for 26 years now.” The organization recently moved to a new location, consolidating offices and the store at a 36,000-square-foot facility at 2200 East Euclid in Des Moines.
Like the representatives at the Habitat and Habitat ReStore booths, the exhibitors at the show know Iowa. They live and work here, and they’re not just at the show to make a sales pitch. Patterson says, “They’re here to meet and help local homeowners with whatever projects they have in mind.”
The show runs Friday – Sunday at the Varied Industries Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Exhibitors and local
professionals will be offering product demonstrations and
seminars on topics such as green building techniques, landscaping, home technology, and renovation throughout the weekend.
“The Home & Remodeling Show is always a popular event with exhibitors and attendees. In fact, nearly every 2011 exhibitor is returning for this year’s show,” Patterson adds.
Current and new HBA members exhibit during the weekend, including remodelers, builders, and local sales reps. Subcontractors will also be available with the latest products and installation
techniques for plumbing, flooring, siding, roofing, painting,
windows, and more. You’ll even find appliance providers, home electronics experts, and kitchen designers, among others. Homeowners can get to know the different companies and their representatives to find the best fit for their upcoming projects.
But you don’t have to be in the market for a new home or remodeling project. Even dreamers enjoy the show.
Patterson says, “This is the perfect opportunity for people to see what products are out there and to talk to potential builders and remodelers and other providers. Even if you don’t own a house yet, it’s a great place to get ideas. And if you’re looking to build a new home or remodel the one you’re in, or even start a landscaping project, you’ll be able to learn more about your options here and meet some of the best contractors around.”
As always, the event includes a drawing for some great prizes, and many exhibitors offer giveaways during the show. What’s more, there’s no cost for admission, parking, or seminars.
