What do NBA star Kobe Bryant, domestic maven Martha Stewart, musician Rod Stewart, and people who are recovering from illness or surgery have in common? All of these people can benefit from practicing Stott Pilates—a contemporary approach to the original Pilates exercise method.
Starting in November, the YMCA Healthy Living Center (Y-HLC) located in Clive will begin offering members and nonmembers the option of participating in Stott Pilates small group classes. Although new to the Y-HLC, Stott Pilates has been around for more than 20 years and was originally developed by a team of physical therapists, sports medicine experts, and fitness professionals in Canada.
“One of the unique components of Stott Pilates compared to yoga or general Pilates is that it can be customized to suit everyone, from patients recovering from surgery or an illness to an elite athlete looking to take his or her workout to the next level,” says Penny Luthens, senior program director of the YMCA Healthy Living Center.
The Y-HLC’s Stott Pilates exercise equipment helps facilitate hundreds of exercise variations at no impact (and therefore easy on the joints), allowing for modifications for those with injuries or conditions, and is suitable for a wide variety of clients (from those in rehab to pro athletes).
The average active person doing two to three classes per week should see some results within 10
to 12 classes. This will vary depending on each individual and other factors, such as the number of classes a person takes each week, whether they are private or group classes, whether the person participates in other physical activities, and whether he or she has any existing injuries. Classes
at the Y-HLC will be taught by certified Stott Pilates instructor Lisa Goodman.
