An executive decision to proactively manage your health

Business leaders don’t always find the time to take care of their health, let alone spend several days traveling to multiple locations for preventive health check-ups or related tests. This holds true for Terry Handley, president and CEO of Casey’s General Stores, Inc. A few months ago, however, Handley found the perfect solution to this scheduling challenge – Mercy’s Executive Health Program.

Through this program, Handley was able to complete an individualized and comprehensive health evaluation in just one day, avoiding the extra time involved with scheduling appointments separately. Upon his scheduled arrival, Handley was given a detailed agenda to maximize his time – and all of the exams were completed efficiently, finishing even earlier than he had expected.

“The specific exams provided me with a detailed overview of my physical health,” Handley said. “And everyone at Mercy was so organized and extremely friendly. I was never left sitting or waiting for the next exam. Someone was always there to get me to the next exam or appointment.” He also said he valued the convenience of having a driver to take him where he needed to be.

“Completing the patient questionnaire in advance and the strict adherence to the day’s agenda by the nursing and administrative staff made the process very easy,” Handley pointed out.

At the end of the day, the results of each exam were summarized by Dr. Valerie Stratton, medical director of the Mercy Executive Health Program. In large part, Handley attributes his positive experience to the friendly medical personnel who took the time to answer his questions in detail before, during and after his appointment day.

“I absolutely recommend this program to others,” Handley said. “Because of my great experience with Mercy, we are considering sending additional members of our senior management team to take part in this program,” he added.

Customized care, concierge service

Mercy designed its comprehensive Executive Health Program with busy professionals in mind, to respect their time, ensure a streamlined experience and provide clinical experts to review results. The dedicated team consists of internal medicine specialty physicians, exercise physiologists, registered dietitians, physical therapists, pharmacists and behavioral health professionals. Participants also have access to Mercy’s network of subspecialty physicians in nearly every medical area for consultation if needed.

Mercy’s Executive Health program uses an integrated approach tailored to the person’s age, gender, personal medical history and known health risk factors. Utilizing nationally-recognized, evidence-based medical guidelines, a one-day program is customized to the participant’s personal health care needs and goals.

The Mercy Executive Health Program

  • provides in-depth analysis into health risks to discover potential problems
  • focuses on total health and wellness, including stress management, fitness and nutrition; and
  • promotes a comprehensive, integrated approach to ensure achievement of lifelong health.

A typical visit includes a complete physical exam by an internal medicine physician, screening tests (biometric, lipid panel), a cardiovascular health and fitness assessment, audiogram (hearing test), bone density testing and lung function testing. Other exams and tests may also be performed, depending upon risk factors and individual health care considerations. To ensure the evaluation is comfortable and convenient, Mercy offers transportation between testing locations, a dedicated client liaison to provide assistance throughout the day and meals, beverages and snacks.

Afterward, a Mercy Executive Health physician prepares a comprehensive and full summary – including a strategic health plan covering prevention measures, health maintenance and disease management protocols. This report is reviewed with the participant to ensure ongoing success.

Taking time to proactively evaluate your health status is like reviewing your health balance sheet, catching up on the latest evidence-based medicine and strategically planning for the future – the future of your health. The Mercy Executive Health program can help you feel confident in your health status, know the action steps you need to take and provide your own personal roadmap to better health and wellness.
