New health center planned to address specialized needs of women

The new Comfort Health Center for Women is expected to open in early 2017 at the current Mercy West location in Clive.

Women have specialized health care needs. To better meet those needs, Mercy announced the creation of a new Comfort Health Center for Women, dedicated to comprehensive care for women in their prime.

The new center is possible thanks to a generous donation from the family of Frank Comfort, a long-time Des Moines lawyer and philanthropist, who passed away in 2012. Mr. Comfort expressed his desire to his family to establish a women’s center in honor of all the women in his family who he had been blessed to have in his life. For three generations, the Comfort family has generously supported initiatives benefiting the health care needs for many within our community.

Mercy Comfort Health Center for Women – which is expected to open in early 2017 – will be the first center of its kind in Iowa. The center will be led by a dedicated team of physicians and medical personnel specially trained in women’s health. In one convenient location, women will have access to comprehensive breast care through Katzmann Breast Center, medical imaging testing, incontinence and pelvic floor disorder care, internal medicine, mental health services and endocrinology. Additional specialty services planned include: cardiology, dermatology, plastic surgery, nutrition and therapeutic massage.

“Women who are in the prime of their life sometimes require specialized health care beyond what their primary care provider or OB/GYN can offer,” said Leisha Barcus, director of Mercy Comfort Health Center for Women. “The new center will be able to offer those specialized health services in one convenient location for our patients.”

Starting this spring, Mercy West in Clive will undergo major renovations for the Mercy Comfort Health Center for Women. Existing clinics will be moved or updated and new ones will be added. The goal of the center is to offer women a seamless health care experience.
