Cutout Sugar Cookies

4 sticks butter, softened
3 cups powdered sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons almond flavoring
5 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar

5½ cups powdered sugar
½ cup milk
2 teaspoons almond flavoring
Gel colorant, if adding color

COOKIES: Cream together butter, sugar, eggs, and flavoring. Mix together dry ingredients. Add to sugar mixture. Beat well. Chill dough 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Roll dough thin. Cut with cookie cutters. Place on baking sheets and bake 8 minutes. Cool and frost. Makes 6 to 8 dozen cookies (depending on size of cookie cutters).

ICING: Mix together powdered sugar, milk, and flavoring until smooth. If coloring the icing, use gel colorant. Apply base coat to cooled cookies, let dry, and then decorate as desired. Let dry overnight before stacking. Recipe courtesy JoAnn Latta.
